Morpho menelaus is a butterfly from the subfamily Satyrinae.
The blue color of the butterfly is not caused by pigment but by the microscopic structure of the wings and is therefore a structural color. The color changes somewhat with the observation angle and the intensity increases strongly with striking light. This is called irising. The males are brighter in color than the females who also have a brown border with white spots on the front wing. The underside of the wings is brown with different 'eyes'. The butterfly has a wingspan of between 100 and 120 millimeters.
